I use to own acoustic drums but had limited space & had to consider the neighbours.

I bought a cheap ion e drum kit but it was dull & unispiring to play.. I think i would have been more enthusiatic  if i didnt have to consider those factors.

Ive considered combining an acoustic snare with pro electronic drums but they still failed to address my space & storage issues.so my only option is to build one...

I'm a qualified electrician & electronic technician so i'm familar with the technical & practical stuff which is well documented . I  personally dislike rubber pads & im not interested in window mesh , stitching, adapting acoustic kits with practice heads etc etc etc.

I have an unlimited budget but the two main issues i had to addresss revolved around frames, triggers & pad response but i found a neat solution & its very cost effective..

It's still work in progress but i hope this thread will  inspire others to brainstorm & expand on creating some functional & attractive e drums....

Ive created a flicker account to preserve my testing , research & progress.

I have an unlimited budget  &  ive looked at many options & forums for ideas but ive decided to use sports rackets as drum frames as they tick all the boxes.

Rackets & strings come in many colours  & have  many advantages.

you can  re- string ,adjust tension dampening etc etc  using easily accesible fishing wire or sports strings..

I prefer the badminton rackets because of the stems but a power user may opt for tennis rackets...

The racket frames are strong , light &  have a hollow shaft. The rims are pre drilled so they can be easily cut & shaped to suit.

The pre - strung  rackets are very durable. responsive & quieter than rubber pads & most drumsticks wont get trapped in the grid..

you can restring them at a bias & add another material to segregate them , combine 2 or more rackets for extra strength , drum  depth , zones, visuals   etc etc.

I intend to cut, resize & restring the frames with coloured strings for visual effect ..

At least 2 rackets will be stringless ..The triggers will be mounted round the rim & played from within the frame like a steel drum...... That's as close to a mandala drum as i can get.

Ive finally completed the external triggers & im euphoric.

The piezo transducers are enclosed & protected & ive mixed & matched heads.

They can be mounted across any surface with minimum effort.

Ive tested them across all surfaces using an alesis dm5 & alesis trigger i/o module & experienced no problems.

Ive decided to accelerate events & create a double sided pad with 3 or 4 zones per side..
I had to vary the piezo dimensions to simplify my research & tests.

I used black candlewax to temporarily seal the chamber as they need to pass my endurance test first..

My modified piezos may also be used as a contact mic or guitar pickup.....

..............................................................

My next task is to combine the rackets & restring them at a bias for my zones..

I'll be auditioning racket strings, fishing wire & garden strimmer wire.

Detailed technical info, images, costings , theories & sources are covered in depth on my flckr page..

@ aquawicket thanks for the feedback..

My email account got hacked & i had some technical issues.

update....

Ive chosen fishing line because it's the quietest material & opted to use tennis rackets as they're easier  to manipulate if you wish to redesign your  frames .

Frames are between 6 - 9 inches

I'm unsure which exposed side looks best on the frames ,the grooved external frame looks better when painted...... Mounting brackets will cover the joints..

Here are some alternative trigger enclosures.

These are made with oval conduit & emit a hotter signal output.  ( A larger sized  piezo is folded in the enclosure )

.............................

Mounting frames  are next on the menu...

Im also working on some translucent  drumkits.

The  piezo's & jacks will be enclosed in clear tube ( aquatic ) & the heads will be struck with clear mallets. ..........These test samples are acyrlic ..

The newer ones will be made from glass. i'll also incorporate some lighting into it at some  stage.

Additional info , images ,costs etc at...
